Wednesday 6th September,
Our guest speaker will be Derek Carter, Chief Executive of Portakabin. Derek will speak about Portakabin as a York based business, how it has grown, how it’s contributing to the economy, future plans and any regional supply chain opportunities.
Derek is the South African born and educated CEO of Portakabin, one of the UK’s superbrands and a famous North Yorkshire family owned business.
After serving his articles with Chartered Accountants, Grant Thornton, Derek spent eleven years at Lewmar, a family company and world leader in the manufacture and supply of advanced deck equipment for the marine leisure industry. During his time with Lewmar he was part of the management team that saw the company list on the LSE and some years later, as CEO, sell to a UK conglomerate before being purchased by Private Equity.
Next was a move to Fairline Boats plc one of the world’s leading leisure marine powerboat manufacturers where as CEO he ran and developed the business in international markets for fifteen years. During his tenure the business changed from public to family and finally private equity ownership.
During his time at Fairline he was approached to join the Shepherd Building Group as a Board member and CEO of Portakabin which coincided with the sale of Fairline to private equity. Six years in, this iconic brand has seen the business grow from strength to strength in the UK and Europe, a story he will tell in his own words starting with Portakabin’s beginnings in 1961
We will also hear from the new York & North Yorkshire Chamber President, Bridget Davies.
