Bradford vying for two national student nursing awards

The University of Bradford has been shortlisted in two categories at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2025

Bradford is nominated in the Partnership of the Year category, for its work with New Vision Bradford/Waythrough on overdose awareness and response training and for the Student Placement of The Year: Community award.

Natalie Finch, Assistant Professor Mental Health Nursing, School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership at the University of Bradford, said: “Training the next generation of nurses on how to use naloxone and overdose awareness will help save lives and break taboos around drug use and overdoses.”

Vikki Carter, Director of Practice Education and Engagement, said: “Both shortlisted projects are examples of how the University of Bradford is leading and innovating in nurse education in Yorkshire and Humber.”

Innovative projects

In the partnership category, all University of Bradford student nurses receive training on how to use naloxone, a lifesaving medication which can reverse overdoses caused by opiates. The training, which started in September 2023, is delivered in partnership with New Vision Bradford, commissioned to deliver drug and alcohol treatment in the area.
Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It attaches to opioid receptors in the brain and reverses and blocks the effects of other opioids.

The Student Placement Community nomination recognises a three-week pilot project where eight second and third year Health students participated in comedy workshops, social prescribing practices and personal health planning.

They also created wellbeing walks around campus and attended workshops with people living with dementia and a video showing how to apply creative strategies when working with dementia patients.

Students have been taught how to use naloxone at the University of Bradford since September 2023

What happens next?

After progressing through an initial online judging stage, both University of Bradford award nominees will carry out live presentations in front of the judging panel, made up of education and healthcare figures and previous winners, in London between March 17 and 26.

The winners of each category will be announced at the Student Nursing Times Awards ceremony on Friday 2 May at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
