Switalskis invests in inclusive qualification routes
Law firm Switalskis is investing in training programmes that support colleagues to train and qualify through a range of routes, enabling them to choose pathways that suit their circumstances.
Switalskis has recently supported solicitor Catherine Cain to qualify through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) while continuing her work in family law. The firm provided adjusted working patterns and study leave to support her through the qualification process.
Catherine specialises in family law, advising clients on divorces, separation, financial arrangements at the end of a relationship and private children law, with a particular interest in children’s law cases. As part of her training Catherine did a seat in child care to broaden her knowledge. She also handles harassment and non-molestation cases.
Catherine says: “Qualifying via the SQE has been challenging but rewarding. It has allowed me to qualify as a solicitor while working with and learning from leading family solicitors. The guidance and flexibility I’ve had has made all the difference, and I’m excited to continue developing my career at Switalskis and to continue supporting children and families with complex cases.”
The approach forms part of the firm’s broader investment in developing legal talent, including training contracts, apprenticeships, and an increasing number of SQE candidates. The firm’s strategy allows individuals to choose the qualification route that suits their circumstances, whether joining as a graduate, seeking an apprenticeship or period of recognised training, or progressing from existing roles at Switalskis.

Catherine is an active member of both the legal and local communities. She was elected charity officer for the Kirklees and Calderdale Junior Lawyers Division and is an active member of the Leeds Junior Law Division and Leeds and Huddersfield Law Societies. Catherine also does volunteer work supporting children in care and through the Switalskis CSR committee.
