Bradford 2nd in UK for optometry amid strong national gains
The University of Bradford has strengthened its position in the latest Complete University Guide 2027 rankings, rising nine places overall as its optometry provision cements its place among the very best in the UK.
Ranked second in the country for Optometry, Ophthalmics & Orthoptics, and first in Yorkshire and the Humber, Bradford continues to build on a reputation as a national leader in eye and vision science, with research and innovation driving real-world impact.
In recent months, University experts have led pioneering studies to slow short-sightedness in young adults and secured major funding to transform how glaucoma is detected through advanced retina scanning technologies, reinforcing Bradford’s status as a powerhouse in optometry and vision research.
The University is also ranked 33rd in the UK for graduate prospects, adding to its current ranking of 16th in the UK for graduates entering highly-skilled jobs (HESA, 2026).
Top subject rankings
Alongside its standout performance in optometry, Bradford is also ranked ninth in the UK for Counselling, Psychotherapy & Occupational Therapy, and first in Yorkshire and the Humber, underlining the breadth of high-quality, professionally focused education on offer.
Overall, the University climbed nine places in the national rankings to 98th, with significant improvements across multiple subject areas.
University of Bradford Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Braisby said: “Our rise of nine places in this year’s rankings reflects excellent performance in our subjects and excellent employability results across the University. This is a trend we have seen mirrored across multiple league tables.
“We are ranked second in the UK for Optometry, Ophthalmics & Orthoptics and ninth for Counselling, Psychotherapy & Occupational Therapy; both subjects rank first in Yorkshire and the Humber region.
“These results, together with similar success in other rankings, show we are delivering on what we promise – to put students first, and are delivering for our students, our city and our partners.”
Upward trend
These results form part of a wider picture of momentum for the University, where academic performance, student success and social impact are converging.
Bradford has been named the number one university in England for social mobility for the fifth year running by the Higher Education Policy Unit, recognising its role in transforming lives through education and opportunity. This commitment to student outcomes is also reflected in graduate success, reflected in a UK top 20 ranking for highly skilled employment (Higher Education Statistics Agency).
