Yorkshire golfers score tee-rific GCSE results
Two junior golfers are celebrating after receiving their GCSE results.
Elliot from Leeds and Bella from Harrogate, students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), both achieved top grades in nine subjects including physical education.
Elliot, who has been playing golf since the age of 10, won the Yorkshire Under-14 Championship in 2024 and plays regularly for the county at under-16 and under-18 level. He has competed in the McGregor Trophy, the Scottish Under-16 Open Championship and the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters as well as making it to the national final of the Independent Schools’ Golf Championship.
Bella also started playing golf in primary school, receiving her first set of clubs for her ninth birthday. She plays regularly for Yorkshire and has the lowest handicap in her squad. This summer, she tied for first place in the St Andrews Junior Ladies Open and she names American pro Nelly Korda as her biggest inspiration.
Elliot has aspirations to continue studying and playing in the US after his A-levels. “I think it would be a great chance to develop both as a golfer and as a person while competing at a high level,” said Elliot. “My main goal is to keep improving, compete at the highest level possible and see where golf can take me.” Meanwhile, Bella is considering options in the UK as well as further afield. “I’ve looked at colleges in the US and I’m keen to see more,” she said.
Michael Hall, Principal at GSAL, said: “We’re so proud of Elliot and Bella’s achievements. They do an incredible job of balancing their academic commitments with golf and they’re brilliant ambassadors for the sport. Well done, Elliot and Bella!”
GSAL’s GCSE Class of 2026 includes a Yorkshire cricketer, a Team GB showjumper and a Bradford City footballer. Six students had particular cause for celebration after receiving 9s – the highest possible grade – in 10 subjects. 35 students achieved grades 8 and 9 across the board.
