Have your say on cashless parking proposal
City of York Council is seeking views on whether to move to ‘cashless payment ticket machines only’ for council owned car parks and on street parking meters.
Have your say at www.york.gov.uk/consultations between Monday 23 October and Monday 4 December.
During this time, information will be available via libraries and Explore Centres in York, West Offices (Station Rise) and via the parking pages on the council’s website. Information stickers are also being placed on the parking machines themselves, to alert customers who use them to the proposal and encourage them to have their say.
Engagement will be supported by the council’s Access Officer and the equalities groups to ensure if cash payments were to be stopped the full impacts can be considered for people who are less inclined to, or can’t use card, contactless or pay by phone payment methods.
One of the reasons why the council is reviewing this proposal is that less than 1 in 10 people now pay for parking using cash, and this is forecast to reduce further.
By going cashless, and removing the need to collect cash from machines, there would be a saving of at least £90k a year. It would also significantly reduce the maintenance costs and risk of theft and damage associated with machines that collect and process cash.
All engagement and feedback will be used to help the council to inform any recommendations that are presented to an Executive Member for Economy and Transport public meeting early next year.
This all follows a Full Council budget meeting in March 2021, which agreed to explore the removal of cashless payments across the council’s parking estate (car parks and on street parking).
A report on cashless parking was then taken a public meeting in July. Read more about this here https://democracy.york.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=1061&MId=14337&Ver=4
