Andrew achieved five A star grades in his A-levels copy

One of the top young mathematicians in the country has received an outstanding set of A-level results.

Andrew, a student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), will head to Cambridge in October to read computer science after achieving a remarkable five A* grades. Andrew’s interest in computers started early. “From a young age, I enjoyed customising my own games,” he said.  “I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and logical thinking, and competitive programming has strengthened that interest over time.”

Andrew’s achievements have established him as one of the most gifted young mathematicians in the country. In 2026, he represented the UK at the Western European Olympiad in Informatics in Luxembourg and was awarded a bronze medal. For the last three years he has achieved distinctions at the British Mathematical Olympiad. He also placed in the top 20% of participants on Harvard’s CS50 course: a world-renowned and highly rigorous introduction to computer science.

Although still unclear about his future career plans, Andrew is drawn to using computer science to solve everyday issues. “My EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) looked at how the development of quantum computers could affect the security systems that protect information sent over the internet,” he said. “And I’ve always enjoyed creating apps which make life easier for people.”

Michael Hall, Principal at GSAL, said, “Andrew is an exceptional mathematician and a dedicated student. We are so proud of his achievements and grateful for his contribution to school life through running the school’s maths society. We wish him every success in the future.”

This year, 58% of A-levels at GSAL were awarded top A/A* grades. Fifteen pupils achieved at least three A*s, while seven students scored A*s in at least three subjects plus an A* in their EPQ. This year’s talented cohort includes three footballers of the future, twins heading to the same prestigious university to study the same course and a young social change campaigner.
