Lane closure on Queen Street as part of work to improve paths

Residents and commuters are being forewarned of a lane closure that is planned at the Queen Street/Blossom Street Junction as the York Station Gateway project continues.

After the removal of much of what was Queen Street Bridge in November, contractors John Sisk & Son will be carrying out works to improve the footpaths and kerbs as part of the major works taking place around the station.

From Monday 20 January the left-hand lane on Queen Street approach to the Micklegate & Blossom Street Junction will be closed. There will still be 2-way traffic, but residents and commuters are asked to plan ahead.

The footway on the city walls side of Queen Street will be closed during these works with pedestrians being directed to use the footway on the station side of Queens Street. A signed pedestrian diversion will be in place.

This stage of work is expected to last for five weeks.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport, said:

“These latest works will help us to make the paths near to this junction better and more accessible. It’s all part of the works to improve the area for everyone, no matter how they are getting to the station.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. Local businesses remain open for business throughout these works, which have been planned for what is traditionally a quieter period for the city to try and minimise disruption. However we know how busy this junction can be so would ask people to plan ahead and where possible use sustainable transport to help keep York moving.”

This major project is being delivered in partnership by City of York Council, Network Rail, LNER and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority alongside contractor for the highways works for the project, John Sisk & Son and is part funded by the UK government.

The ambitious project will completely transform the station frontage, providing an improved transport interchange, as well as revamping the public space around the station. The scheme will also create an improved setting for the City Walls and other heritage buildings in the area.
