Leeds twins seeing double with outstanding A-level grades
A set of Leeds twins are heading to the same university to study the same course after receiving an exceptional set of A-level results.
Alex and Harry, both students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), have secured places to study philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Durham University after achieving top grades in the same subjects. Alex achieved A* grades in business, government and politics, maths and his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and an A grade in economics. Meanwhile Harry scored A*s in business, economics and government and politics and As in maths and his EPQ.
“I suppose that Harry and I were always likely to study the same course due to our shared interests,” said Alex. “However, we did decide to apply for different colleges!” As well as similar academic interests, Alex and Harry share a passion for sport, particularly football and cricket. “We’ve always been very competitive – which is good because it makes sure that neither of us is slacking!” added Alex.
Alex’s achievements include being listed for Cambridge University’s R.A. Butler Prize – an award for essays in politics and international studies – and leading the school’s business and economics society, while Harry was a finalist in the Economics World Cup and coaches an under-9s football team.
Michael Hall, Principal at GSAL, said, “Alex and Harry have made a huge contribution to school life at GSAL since joining us for sixth form and we know they will go on to do the same at university. We congratulate them on their excellent results and wish them every success for the future.”
This year, 58% of A-levels at GSAL were awarded top A/A* grades. Fifteen pupils achieved at least three A*s, while seven students scored A*s in at least three subjects plus an A* in their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This year’s talented cohort includes three footballers of the future, a young social change campaigner and one of the top young mathematicians in the country.
