Less stress with an accommodation guarantee for Clearing applicants on A level results day

On Thursday 14 August, thousands of teenagers across the country find out if their A level results have secured them a place at university. For those who get grades that are better or worse than expected, want to swap courses, or make a last-minute decision to study a degree, Clearing provides an opportunity to join one of a huge range of available university courses.

It can be an uncertain time for prospective students, so to help ease the pressure, York St John University has confirmed that once again, applicants who apply through Clearing and accept their offer within 24 hours will be guaranteed University accommodation.

Matthew Taylor, Director of Marketing, Student Recruitment and Admissions at York St John University said: “York is a great destination for students and demand for accommodation can be high. We know that juggling your results with choosing your university course is already a challenge, without worrying about getting accommodation sorted.

“To help ease the stress, applicants who apply to York St John through Clearing and accept their offers within 24 hours are guaranteed a place in University managed accommodation or with our trusted accommodation partners.

“With places remaining on courses including law, primary teaching, nursing, business and psychology, our friendly team is ready to support applicants with their choices on results day.”

The University has published a guide on How Clearing works | York St John University and shared these top tips to demystify the Clearing process.

Clearing Dos and Don’ts:

  • Do some research on university websites before results day if you think that you’ll be looking for a place.
  • Do research the course that you are looking at. Some courses may need you to be interviewed before you are offered a place, for example Nursing or Occupational Therapy.
  • Do make sure that you have your full results from your school or college – make sure you know how to get them on results day.
  • Do look at the full picture before committing to a university – location, course, student support, accommodation if you need it, and any other information that will be important to you.
  • Do read any information that universities send you after you have got an offer. It will tell you what to do next and, in some cases, put a time limit on replying to your offer.
  • Do take your time. If you have received an offer from one university, you can still call others and potentially get more offers to consider.
  • Don’t panic – it’s easier said than done but there will be quite a lot of places in clearing this year, hopefully including the perfect one for you.
  • Don’t try and get someone else to make calls to universities for you. Universities won’t deal with anyone but the applicant. If you are making calls, find a quiet place and have your phone number, a reliable emails address, your UCAS number and results ready.
  • Don’t put off making those calls. Although there will be lots of places available, universities will shut courses once they are full.

York St John will be opening its dedicated Clearing Call Centre at 8.00am on Thursday 14 August with specially trained advisors available until 7pm to offer support and advice. You can contact the team via clearing@yorksj.ac.uk or via the Clearing Hotline 01904 809700.

The University is holding an Open Day on Saturday 16 August for 2024 Clearing applicants and 2025 applicants. More information on the Open Day page.
