Hyde Park Picture House Cinema Takeover: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Students at Notre Dame returned to Hyde Park Picture House on Sunday 18th January for their cinema takeover project. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to organise and facilitate their very own film screening. The project allows our students to gain invaluable insight and experience in event planning and the wider creative sector.

Students screened the 1986 John Hughes cult film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as selected by them. The students lead an introduction on how the film connects with their experiences as they near the end of sixth form, and how it has motivated them to appreciate their time with friends before they start their next chapter.

Thank you to everyone who came, we sold over 140 tickets in total. Everyone looked fantastic in their 80s dress!

Product Design Trip

Two groups of Upper Sixth A-level Product Design students recently visited MPM Ltd in Bramley, Leeds, for an insightful factory tour. MPM (Moulds, Patterns and Models) Ltd is a glass reinforced plastic manufacturer.

The trip provided students with a valuable opportunity to see lean manufacturing principles in action and explore the complexities of project management systems and composite materials. Students were guided through various stages of production and they were able to connect their classroom theories with real-world applications, deepening their understanding of the industry. The experience was a vital part of their learning, offering a first-hand look at the innovative processes and technologies that shape the product design field.

Media Trips

On Tuesday [20th January 2026] our students visited Huddersfield for the NFTS outreach day at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. They attended talks by 2 guest speakers and saw the short films they worked on while attending the university. Our students asked some great questions after, then spend the afternoon completing a film production workshop with one of the guest speakers. They learned how to organise a schedule for shooting, and how to scout locations and contact actors.

On Wednesday they made their way to The Academy of Live Technology to tour their facilities and find out more about what student life is like. We saw their live event sets and toured the workshop where they make props for artists such as Coldplay and Beyonce.
