Ousewem further expands flood resilience efforts
Ousewem is thrilled to announce the continued expansion of its natural flood management (NFM) focus areas within the North Yorkshire Swale, Ure, Nidd and Ouse catchments, expanding its focus initially to communities in Arkengarthdale, Masham, Bellerby, and Bishop Monkton, with other communities to follow where resources allow. This follows the previous phase which targeted communities in Appersett, Gayle, Hawes, and Hunton, where further projects continue to be delivered. This expansion highlights our ongoing commitment to flood resilience through nature-based solutions (NbS), including natural flood management (NFM) such as wetland creation, forestry, and leaky dams.
Refined approach
The latest phase reflects a continued evolution of our targeted, collaborative approach to selecting communities. Building on the foundations of previous phases—where hydrological modelling was combined with insights from landowners—the latest catchments were prioritised using evidence, and input from a range of stakeholders, including North Yorkshire Council, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Nidderdale National Landscape, the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust. This collaborative and evidence-based process helps focus efforts where the greatest impact will be made. ]
Our focus remains on creating a lasting legacy in these catchments. Ousewem is keen to commence early engagement to maximise delivery in this phase. Moving forward, the project will re-evaluate community uptake and funding needs, ensuring that resources are optimally allocated to enhance flood resilience across North Yorkshire.
Supporting farmers and landowners
Farmers and landowners in these catchments are invited to collaborate with the Ousewem team. Our delivery process includes an assessment of each site to determine eligibility for NbS/NFM projects. If eligible, the team will co-design solutions in partnership with the landowner. The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust will lead the delivery, with support from experts such as Natural England and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority or Nidderdale National Landscape. Ousewem can also assist in navigating the funding landscape to explore environmental initiatives and additional funding options.
Community benefits
For local communities, the next phase of projects aims to increase resilience to flood risk, enhance natural habitats, and move towards a more sustainable future. This initiative builds on the achievements of previous phases, contributing to a legacy of resilient communities and sustainable landscapes.

Ousewem’s long-term vision will continue through to 2027 as part of a plan to deliver NbS, including NFM, across Yorkshire.
