Over 150 locals bring scarecrow magic to Harewood House this October Half Term
At Harewood we’re passionate about sharing our stunning House, Grounds and Gardens with as many people as possible. As a charity ourselves, it’s essential that we’re able to raise funds through tickets, events and membership to put back into the Trust to sustain it. However, at our core and in line with our values, it is also incredibly important to us that we make Harewood as accessible as possible. We do this through a range of offers and promotions, as well as through initiatives like our Community Access Membership (CAM), working specifically with the following groups:
- Children with special educational needs or disabilities
- Local families from low-income households
- Care-experienced young people
- Local visitors of the global majority

Our relationship with our CAM Members is more than transactional, we aim to build deep and meaningful relationships with the groups, and it is for this reason we were absolutely thrilled to welcome them to support our fantastic 50-scarecrow-strong Halloween Scarecrow Trail.
From Stone Age Men to Mr Darcy, Nurse Nancy to the Grey Lady, more than 10 groups, and 150 people helped create these fantastic scarecrows for visitors to enjoy.
New Beginnings Peer Support told us: “Scarecrow building has to be one of the best events ever held for us. The thought that has gone into it, ensuring the women and children had the opportunity to really get involved and make it their own was impressive.
The event space was perfect and the choice available so creativity could flow was wonderful. Not to mention the volunteers, their enthusiasm, patience, empowerment and encouragement was second to none, all the families and children of all ages felt welcomed and involved. I for one cannot wait to see their faces when they see their scarecrows out in the wild!!”

And a carer from Carers Leeds told us: “This event was great, it was such fun and so relaxed. There was plenty of time to engage with others and for a couple of hours we were not carers, we were a group of people enjoying being creative and enjoying each other’s company. Thanks a lot.”
Events and workshops like these help bring the Harewood experience to life, while embracing our values of community and creativity.
So if you’re visiting us this October Half Term and taking part in the Scarecrow Trail, you’re not just joining in a fun Halloween activity – your support also helps us continue our work within the local community.
