Whitby Netwalking with English Heritage
The West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce team visited the beautiful North Yorkshire landscape yesterday, for a guided tour around Whiby Abbey led by English Heritage. Joined by various business representatives from across the region, guests enjoyed the glorious sunshine on offer whilst also being treated to an insightful talk about the rich history of the area and the conservation work being carried out on the rooftop of Cholmley House (Whitby Hall).
English Heritage are working hard to improve the visitor centre’s sustainability, through the installment of 28 photovoltaic solar panels on the new terne-coated steel roof, which will save over nine metric tons of carbon each year. This equates to the same amount used to charge over one million smartphones or run five and a half cars for a year. The design will ensure that:
- There’s no visual change to the building.
- The resident bats can still access their homes.
- The hidden solar panels will help reduce their carbon footprint.
- The building will cope better with heavy rainfall and exposure to the elements.
As well as reducing their environmental impact, English Heritage are also adapting to the impacts of climate change, by redesigning the rainwater outlets and doubling the size of the downpipes to future proof the roof. Our netwalkers were given the opportunity to scale the scaffolding and see the renovation work taking place on the roof firsthand, becoming the very first members of the public to see this soon to be completed project. The views of Whitby Abbey from the rooftop were unrivalled – made all the more stunning by the bright blue coastal skyline.
Thanks to all who attended the Netwalking event at Whitby Abbey. For those who haven’t already booked, English Heritage will also be taking us on another tour of Rievaulx Abbey on 8th August 2024. This is a great opportunity to build your business connections whilst discovering the impressive ruins of one of England’s most powerful Cistercian monasteries. Book your place here for what promises to be an interesting guided tour, set in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/netwalking-at-rievaulx-abbey-tickets-914631787297?aff=ebdsoporgprofile.
