Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2024

Some evenings unfold just like a blockbuster movie, and the St. James’ Place: Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards (YCCA) is the perfect example. This year’s event on October 18th had all the ingredients: emotion, drama, joy, and most importantly, empathy. As Head Sponsor for the second year in a row, we proudly donated £10,000 to this incredible cause, ensuring a night to remember for all involved.

Set against the backdrop of a glamorous 1920s theme, the evening was nothing short of cinema. Dance performances dazzled, soulful singing filled the room, and exciting games like the Raffle kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

Like any great film, the evening featured a star-studded cast. Leeds United legend Brian Deane, actress Natalie Anderson, and former Leeds Rhinos player Danika Priim graced the event, while former Rhinos icon Kevin Sinfield, a dedicated YCCA ambassador, sent a heartfelt video message, praising the power of the evening. Other notable attendees included stars from Emmerdale, BBC Apprentice winner Rachel Woolford, radio personalities JoJo and Stephanie Hirst, and the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Abigail Marshall Katung.

All of these celebrities gathered to support and celebrate the remarkable courage and inspiring acts of young children. From scaling mountain peaks to raise money for a noble cause to bravely battling life-threatening diseases, these extraordinary kids displayed immense bravery and resilience at an age when most are just beginning to explore the world. Their stories serve as powerful reminders that heroism comes in all ages, and their efforts have touched countless lives, leaving an enduring impact.

One of the most poignant scenes of the night was the presentation of the Dare to Dream award, created in memory of Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow. This year, it went to Freddie, a courageous 12-year-old who raised awareness and funds for organ donation through Leeds Hospital Charity—a true example of bravery and compassion.

The awards, spanning 10 categories, celebrated the remarkable resilience and compassion of Yorkshire’s young heroes. The highlight of the evening was the prestigious Children’s Charity of the Year award, presented by our Group Managing Director, Paul Turner, and Charity Liaison Officer, Isabel Norton. This year, the honour was rightfully awarded to Candlelighters, a charity devoted to the fight against childhood cancer by offering unwavering support to families facing extraordinary challenges.

Reflecting on the event, Paul Turner remarked, “It was an absolute privilege to support and celebrate the achievements of these inspiring children, their families, and their extraordinary resilience.”

As the awards ceremony wrapped up, guests were treated to a delicious feast, including irresistible desserts. But like any blockbuster with a twist, the night didn’t end there. The after-party kicked off with live music and a packed dance floor, ensuring the celebrations continued long into the night.

In every sense, the 2024 Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards was a perfect story of triumph, community, and joy. A night where the stars aligned for a cause that truly matters, playing to a full house and leaving everyone inspired.
