Aesthetica Young Filmmakers Summer School 2026 (Ages 11–16)

Aesthetica Film Festival is launching a brand-new initiative this summer — the Aesthetica Young Filmmakers Summer School 2026, a hands-on filmmaking programme for young people aged 11–16 in York.

Programme Overview

The Summer School runs across three weekend cohorts:

  • 1–2 August 2026
  • 8–9 August 2026
  • 15-16 August 2026

Each weekend gives young people the opportunity to experience the full filmmaking process. Working in small teams, participants will develop ideas, write scripts, direct, act, operate cameras and produce their own short film with support from professional filmmakers.

No previous experience is required — just creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm for storytelling.

The programme supports creative confidence, collaboration and communication skills, while introducing participants to pathways in the creative and media industries. It is part of York’s commitment to its UNESCO City of Media Arts status, helping to expand access to industry-relevant arts education.

End-of-Programme Screening

Participants will be invited to a celebratory screening at City Screen on 8 November 2026, as part of the BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival. The event will include a screening of all completed films, a panel discussion with the young filmmakers, and a reception for families and participants.
