York marks Remembrance Sunday
The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Margaret Wells, the Civic Party and City of York Council will pay their respects to fallen soldiers and ex-service personnel at York’s official Remembrance Sunday service and parade.
On Sunday 10 November, the parade will depart from Clifford’s Tower at 10:20am and make its way to the City War Memorial via the Mansion House. The Civic Party will lead the parade, accompanied by service people from regiments across York, with invited dignitaries and representatives from local organisations.
The ceremony will begin at 10:58am with the ‘Ode to the Fallen’, ahead of the ‘Last Post’ and a gun salute at 11am. This will be followed by prayers, and local organisations will lay wreaths led by HM’s Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs Johanna Ropner and the Lord Mayor.
The bands providing music for the parade and service will be the York Railway Institute Band and the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.
The parade will then return to St Helen’s Square where the Mansion House flag will be lowered to half-mast, as a mark of respect. The Lord Mayor, the Civic Party and guests will salute the parade as it continues along Coney Street.
The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Margaret Wells, said:
“Remembrance Sunday is a solemn and significant day in the life of our city. It’s when we come together to pay our respects and honour all who serve, all who have served and, most especially, to those who have given their lives in service of their country. It is an honour to be part of this act of remembrance.”
