Teesside lays down marker for aviation industry with TUI maintenance deal
Teesside’s reputation as a growing centre for aircraft maintenance has received another big boost after aviation firm Willis secured a second deal with a major airline.
TUI, one of the UK’s largest operators, has signed a long-term agreement with Willis Aviation to see maintenance services carried out on its narrow-body aircraft at Teesside.
The deal comes hot on the heels of Willis signing a deal with carrier Jet2 to carry out in-depth “C-check” inspections on its Boeing 737s.
TUI Boeing 737NGs will be the first to see maintenance checks at Teesside. The airport’s Jet Centre by Willis provides a full range of ground handling services for business, private aviation, military, and cargo flights.
The company leases Hangar 2 at the airport as its base for aircraft maintenance, storage, and disassembly. However, the company has secured planning permission to expand its operations at Teesside in aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO).
Phil Forster, Managing Director of Teesside Airport, said: “Willis has been a vital partner for Teesside and this agreement is yet another example of their commitment to our airport.
“This second deal shows we’re growing as an attractive option for aircraft MRO with operators sitting up and taking notice of what our site has on offer.
“Firms can see their aircraft maintained and painted at Teesside – and this, combined with our vision to grow, positioning in the heart of the UK, and Freeport status, strengthens our push to see more aircraft based here.
“This is another good sign for our airport’s future – and having quality companies in TUI and Jet2 more involved with Teesside is a huge boost.”
Austin C. Willis, Chief Executive Officer of WLFC, added: “We are thrilled to collaborate with TUI Airways, a highly regarded airline recognized for its customer-centric approach and operational excellence.
“This partnership underscores our dedication to providing top-tier MRO solutions, supporting TUI’s fleet, and contributing to local economic growth by creating skilled job opportunities within the UK aerospace industry.”
The agreement is the latest in a string of positive announcements at Teesside Airport Business Park.
Last week saw Draken win a £173million contract with the Ministry of Defence – securing its Teesside operations for another four years.
Aircraft painting firm Airbourne Colours has now painted more than 10 planes from its Teesside base since opening its £6.5million development at the airport site in October.
And award-winning vehicle repairer ABL 1 Touch was unveiled as the new tenant at its state-of-the-art facility at the £200million Business Park.
