Chadwick Lawrence advises Dormeuil on prestigious acquisition to become one of the UK’s largest fabric producers

Leading Yorkshire law firm Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors has advised prestigious luxury cloth maker Dormeuil Manufacturing Limited on the acquisition of Alfred Brown (Worsted Mills) Limited, a leading Yorkshire-based worsted cloth producer, for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition reinforces Dewsbury-based Dormeuil Manufacturing’s commitment to British textile manufacturing, as it acquires 100% of Leeds-based fabric mill Alfred Brown to expand the Dormeuil Group, which has its headquarters in Paris. The consolidation of the brands places them together as one of the UK’s largest fabric producers.

Founded in 1915, Alfred Brown is an authentic brand with its own weaving factory producing the highest level of fabrics, made in the UK and sold globally. Although Dormeuil retains its French headquarters, the business has used English cloth since 1842. Both family-owned, the companies share the same values of heritage, quality, and a passion for textiles.

The deal was led by Chadwick Lawrence’s corporate and commercial team (partner Sarah Hemmings assisted by Christian Liceralde), with commercial property partner Jonathan Moore and employment partner Sam Pawson providing specialist advice in their own fields.

On completing the acquisition, Sarah Hemmings commented: “It is always really exciting to see two businesses which have so much in common successfully come together to be able to reach even further into the marketplace. Dormeuil recognises, and has huge regard for, Alfred Brown’s respected brand, and is committed to being able to project this even further with their extensive international expertise and experience.

This is a consolidation of two highly successful enterprises which has every potential to reach unprecedented heights. We wish both Dormeuil and Alfred Brown every success with this new chapter.”

Through this acquisition, Dormeuil aims to draw on its own expertise and international reach to extend the Alfred Brown brand worldwide, while staying true to its heritage and values.

Marcus Jessop FCA, finance director at Dormeuil Manufacturing, added: “On behalf of Dormeuil Manufacturing and the wider Dormeuil Group, I wanted to extend our thanks and appreciation to Chadwick Lawrence LLP for helping to get the acquisition of Alfred Brown over the line.

The team went above and beyond, were proactive throughout the process and were an invaluable member of the deal-making team. Without hesitation, I would welcome the opportunity of working with them again and equally, I would not hesitate in recommending Chadwick Lawrence LLP as a corporate deal partner.”
