Chief executive celebrated for transforming health services

The Chief Executive of Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised for her leadership and dedication to public service by the University of Bradford.

Therese Patten, who has held the post since September 2020, has more than 17 years of board-level experience in the National Health Service.

She has received an Outstanding Contribution Award from the University ‘In recognition of the significant contribution she has made to the health and wellbeing of the district.’

Therese, who received her honorary award at the University of Bradford on Wednesday 3 December, said: “I am delighted and very proud to be nominated for the award and know that it recognises not me, but the work that our fabulous staff do across Bradford and Craven.”

Who is Therese Patten?   

Therese’s extensive career in health and social care provision at local, regional and national levels, was born through her commitment to improving patient outcomes and addressing inequalities in communities.

The chance to lead transformation and working with others to tackle real-world problems has been a driving force throughout her career in healthcare.

Therese’s other roles include as Place Lead for the Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership, and National Director for Place Development working within the System Architecture Team of NHS England. She is a Trustee on the Board of NHS Providers where she represents the interests of mental health trusts across the country.

Her previous posts include as Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Strategy at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, and senior leadership roles at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust in Merseyside, and Liverpool Community Health. She has also worked in health development in Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Somaliland.

As part of the responsibilities of her CEO role in the Bradford district, Therese works closely with the University of Bradford, supporting research, education, and partnerships.

She also supports the University’s drive to develop the health and care workforce of the future.

‘Be visible and authentic’

Therese also had this advice for her fellow graduates: “My congratulations to them and I would encourage them to work in the health and social care sector, which is hugely rewarding.

“Be visible and authentic, and lead from whatever seat you are in.

“Aspiring leaders should seek feedback, nurture talent, and remain true to their values, even in the most difficult circumstances.

“Powerful leadership is about enabling others, fostering collaboration, and championing diversity.”
