York celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

City of York Council is celebrating the value, benefits and opportunities apprenticeships bring to individuals, businesses and the wider economy during National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) next week (9-15 February).

NAW shines a light on how apprenticeships are a great option for people to consider when they are looking to start or change careers. With apprenticeships available across a wide range of sectors and employers they represent a great step in finding a new career. There’s also wide ranging benefits for employers who may be looking to fill skill gaps, scale their business or grow their own talent.

There are currently over 50 apprenticeship opportunities within 10 miles from the centre of York, ranging across the city’s key and growth sectors. These are from a range of employers, including large international companies to small and medium York businesses.

Cllr Pete Kilbane

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Economy and Culture, including Skills and Apprenticeships, said:

“High quality skills and learning for all is one of the key pillars of our Council Plan. One of core commitments to this is promoting and improving pathways to employment.

“National Apprenticeship Week is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the benefits that apprenticeships bring to both individuals and businesses and better still highlight the fantastic work of our hard working apprentices across York.”

For more information about apprenticeships and to meet perspective employers’ people can attend the free York Jobs, Apprenticeships and Skills Fair on Tuesday 24 March at the York Barbican. Employers are also being urged to register to exhibit at the event to meet potential employees face to face. The national scheme enables apprenticeship levy-paying employers to use a percentage of their levy to fully fund the apprenticeship training and assessment costs, from entry level to degree level, for small to medium sized businesses in their area, helping connect them to their future workforce or boost productivity by upskilling existing teams.

To date, the council has approved over £395,000 worth of apprenticeship levy transfer requests to support both new apprentice recruits and existing employees in York businesses to develop their skills.
