Sir Stephen Fry urges people to support York Against Cancer and spread the word about the importance of early diagnosis in prostate cancer

In a video to York Against Cancer this prostate cancer awareness month, Sir Stephen Fry has urged people to support the charity and spread the word about the importance of early diagnosis in prostate cancer.

Sir Stephen Fry was diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer in 2017. In a video for York Against Cancer, he has raised the importance of early diagnosis, without which, he “wouldn’t be alive” today.

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and if you are black, your risk is double. Early diagnosis is crucial, as it makes it much easier to treat. For prostate cancer found at Stage 1 and Stage 2, almost everyone will survive their cancer for 5 years or more after they are diagnosed. For prostate cancer found at Stage 4, this reduces to 50%.

In his video for York Against Cancer, Sir Stephen has urged the importance of getting this message across, and doing it in a “fun way – as York is doing.”

On Father’s Day, York Against Cancer will be holding it’s annual 5K / 10K fun run, R U Taking the P…? which aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer whilst raising vital funds for the charity.

The run was established by York hairdresser Brian Hughes, a founder of Knavesmire Harriers, who was inspired to fundraise after a friend lost his life to prostate cancer.
