Bradford mum hosts charity ball in memory of her son
A Bradford mum is hosting a charity ball to raise money for children in hospital, in loving memory of her son, Axl.
Claire Walker from Wibsey, has spent the past ten years fundraising for Bradford Hospitals Charity after losing her son Axl just days before his third birthday.
“I just want to make a difference,” said Claire. “No child should sit in hospital for days, weeks or months without the opportunity to play – their health condition shouldn’t define or confine them.”
Axl bravely battled a rare blood disorder, requiring frequent visits to Bradford Royal Infirmary for monthly blood transfusions and two bone marrow transplants. Despite the intensive treatment and long hospital stays, Claire fondly remembers him as a joyful little boy.
“Despite everything he went through in his short life, he was such a happy little boy and absolutely loved to play,” she said. “We were in hospital so regularly and without all the toys and activities he would have lost his sparkle.”
Inspired by Axl’s courage and love of play, Claire launched the Sparkle for Axl campaign, which has now raised more than £22,000, supporting hundreds of children over the years. Last year alone, Claire completed an incredible 13 half marathons in Axl’s memory.
Funds raised through the campaign have provided countless toys and activities for children of all ages in Bradford’s hospitals, as well as contributing towards creating a sensory room for the sickest children who need to spend extended periods as inpatients.
The campaign proudly supports Bradford Hospitals Charity’s Gift of Play appeal, which ensures children receiving care can take part in age‑appropriate play and therapeutic activities that support their wellbeing during what can be a frightening and isolating time.
Laura Riach, Director of Bradford Hospitals Charity, said: “You cannot underestimate the importance of play in hospital. Children are placed in an unfamiliar clinical environment and often miss out on the day-to-day activities other families enjoy. We want to ensure that every child, regardless of ability, has access to fun and learning. Claire is one of our greatest advocates through Sparkle for Axl, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she has done.”
The Sparkle for Axl Charity Ball will take place on Friday 18 September 2026 at Bradford City Football Club, bringing together supporters, families and the local community for an evening of fundraising and remembrance.
Tickets are £50 and everyone in attendance will enjoy a two-course meal, live music, a DJ, as well as the opportunity to join in games and a raffle with some incredible prizes.
