Yorkshire engineering firm celebrates success at HSBC’s Small Business Awards

Leading mechanical and electrical engineering firm Salko UK, is celebrating after its family business has been recognised by a leading national award.

Salko UK was awarded the Yorkshire, Humber and the North East ‘Family Business Award’ at last night’s HSBC Small Business Awards. The business was recognised for its strong family ethos and active involvement from multiple generations.

Family ownership, leadership and values are embedded at every level of the organisation and have directly shaped its long-term success. Founded in 2000 by Dean Murphy, Salko UK has remained family-owned for 25 years, growing organically while maintaining a strong sense of credibility, trust and responsibility to both people and clients.

Intergenerational leadership is at the helm of the business with Dean’s daughter, Georgina Wilkinson, progressing through the company over 15 years and now serving as Chief Financial Officer, bringing strong financial governance and strategic oversight. Dean’s son, Gary Murphy, Senior Electrical Lead, has also progressed through operational roles and now leads key site-based delivery functions, ensuring technical excellence and workforce continuity.

The award ceremony took place last night at Oulton Hall in Leeds, where winners from various categories were celebrated. As a category winner, Salko UK will now proceed to the national finals at the Savoy in London.

Salko UK has a longstanding heritage, with its operations dating back to first working on Hatfield Colliery – one of the last operational coal mines in the United Kingdom. The company’s initial engagement in power generation began with the provision of a single mechanical fitter, working alongside the client’s in-house team.

The business is also known for delivering innovative mechanical and electrical solutions across the energy, commercial, industrial, and mining sectors, supporting on major projects such as Woodsmith Mine and Enfield Power Station.
