Residents from Hambleton Grange enjoy immersive historical day out at Leeds Armouries Museum
Residents from Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, enjoyed a memorable and long-awaited trip to the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds after requesting a visit during their regular residents’ meetings.
Thanks to a timely opportunity to swap the care home minibus to a day when the museum was open, the lifestyle team were able to make the popular suggestion a reality, resulting in a full day of exploration, learning, and entertainment.
Residents were treated to a wide range of exhibits, including historic battle armour for both people and animals, centuries-old weaponry, and interactive displays that allowed them to engage directly with elements of the collection. One of the highlights of the visit was watching live reenactments of significant historical battles, bringing history vividly to life.
After a busy morning of discovery, the group enjoyed lunch before travelling back to Thirsk, with residents reflecting on a day filled with fascinating sights and new knowledge.
Elaine Snowden, Lifestyle Manager at Hambleton Grange, said the trip was a huge success and praised the enthusiasm of residents throughout the day, supported by carers Maureen Alderson and Dita Phillips.
Resident Johnny Coverdale said:
“It was a great day out, I really enjoyed it.”
Peter Conway added:
“A fantastic experience, I don’t know how they carried some of the heavy weapons.”
John Brewster commented:
“It was a very interesting day out, I really enjoyed it, amazing.”
John Brewster also demonstrated impressive prior knowledge of the collection, having researched the museum ahead of the visit and informing fellow residents and staff that some of the armoury currently on display was once housed in the Tower of London.
Elaine Snowden said the visit reflected the home’s commitment to fulfilling residents’ interests and supporting meaningful experiences outside the home environment, with the trip sparking conversation, curiosity, and shared enjoyment throughout the group.
