University of Bradford ranked 1st (again) in England for improving access to higher education

The University of Bradford has been ranked first in England by the Social Mobility Commission for recruiting the most disadvantaged students, when location is factored in.

The report covers universities across England and is designed to measure which universities do the most to improve access to higher education among students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. 

The ranking follows a string of similar awards and accolades for Bradford, which include: 

Talent and opportunity 

The findings come as thousands of students prepare to make decisions through Clearing, highlighting Bradford’s long-standing commitment to widening opportunity and helping students realise their potential. 

Professor Gillian Murray, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, said: “Talent exists in every community. The challenge is ensuring opportunity does too. This ranking reflects our long-standing commitment to widening access to higher education while helping students gain the skills, confidence and experience they need to succeed. 

“As students receive their results and consider their next steps through Clearing, we want them to know that your background should never determine your future. At Bradford, we are committed to helping every student realise their potential.” 

In June, according to the most recent Higher Education Statistics Agency figures, nine out of 10 Bradford graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduation. 

The University is also ranked in the Top 20 in England for those entering highly-skilled employment, while figures also revealed that three-quarters of graduates go on to find jobs in the Yorkshire and Humber region, the highest proportion among any West Yorkshire university. 

Background 

The Social Mobility Commission is an independent public body that advises the UK Government on improving social mobility in England. It was established under the Life Chances Act 2010 (and updated by the Welfare Reform and Work Act 2016) to assess progress on social mobility and promote opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
