Andrew Jackson advises on acquisition of Falkland Islands’ first container vessel
Andrew Jackson Solicitors LLP announces that it has acted as legal advisor to Falkland Islands based Consolidated Fisheries Limited (CFL) on its acquisition of MV Unispirit, which is the Islands’ first container vessel. The vessel was handed over to new ownership in Montevideo on 7th April 2025.
The 6296 gross tonne vessel was purchased from Hamburg-based shipping company UNIATLANTICO and builds on long-standing relationships with trusted Falkland Islands shipping partners.
CFL’s legal advice was led by Gavin Farquhar, partner in Andrew Jackson’s shipping and transport team, who was supported by Rebecca Forder.
“The acquisition structure establishes a new CFL interest in the Hamburg shipping sector, opening up new connections and expertise and creating a platform for future growth,” said CFL chairman James Wallace, who led the acquisition process.
“The vessel will continue to be chartered to South American Atlantic Service Limited (SAAS), so the service will continue as we are all familiar with. This investment is however important, as it helps secure the Islands’ shipping link, which is significant given how scarce suitable vessels are for the Falkland’s trade.”
Jill Ford, general manager of South American Atlantic Service Limited, said: – “From a SAAS perspective this is really positive, welcome news and provides service stability for us and our customers into the future. We look forward to working through the Charter under the new ownership of Unispirit Shipping.”
Gavin Farquhar added: – “It has been a pleasure to work with Consolidated Fisheries on this significant transaction, which has been many years in the making. We wish them all the very best for the future of MV Unispirit.”
