City of York Council celebrates National Social Work Day [17 March] with local social workers nominated for national awards

Social workers from City of York Council’s Adult and Children’s Social Work teams have been nominated for the national Amazing Social Worker awards.

Organised by the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), the campaign aims to recognise individual and collective achievements in social work, shining a spotlight on the countless examples of exceptional social work practice in the UK

Over 300 individuals and teams were nominated by their colleagues this year nationally, including frontline practitioners, students, managers, leaders, educators and newly qualified social workers.

BASW will feature their accomplishments on their website and social media channels throughout March as part of their celebrations for World Social Work Day.

Cllr Bob Webb, the council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “We know that our social workers go the extra mile for the young people and families they work with day after day, which is one of the reasons our Children’s Social Care service was assessed as Outstanding by Oftsed last year. I’m so pleased that once again, the tireless efforts of our team in York have been recognised nationally. Huge congratulations to all those involved.”

Cllr Lucy Steels Walshaw, the council’s Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, explained: “This campaign highlights some of the very best social work practice in the country, and I’m so pleased that York’s social workers are among those being recognised.

“I also want to thank all our social workers for everything they do. Their dedication, compassion, and determination to improve people’s lives every single day make an extraordinary difference across our city.”

BASW UK Vice-Chair Lewis Roberts said: “BASW is proud run our Amazing Social Workers campaign for its sixth consecutive year. It is a wonderful way for our profession to celebrate inspiring social work practice and pay tribute to the many individual and collective successes that deserve to be noticed.

“Across our communities, social workers go above and beyond to make a positive difference to the lives of adults, children and families they support. Whether it’s advancing people’s rights and challenging injustices, to advocating for fairness and promoting wellbeing, the role of social work has never been more important during these challenging times.

“Congratulations to everyone who has been recognised this year and thank you for all you do everyday. We look forward to shining a spotlight on your achievements as part of our World Social Work Day celebrations.”
