GSAL Principal shortlisted for national award
The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) is proud to announce that Principal, Sue Woodroofe, has been shortlisted for Headteacher of the Year (Independent) in the Tes Schools Awards 2025.
Now in its 17th year, the Tes Schools Awards celebrates the most outstanding teachers, leaders and support staff across the UK’s state and independent sectors. Dubbed the ‘Oscars of education’, this year’s shortlist recognises 22 categories, shining a spotlight on exceptional contributions to school life.
Sue’s nomination recognises her transformative leadership at GSAL since 2016. Under her stewardship, the school has earned accolades such as The Sunday Times North Independent School of the Year and Decade, Eco School of the Year and School of the Year from the National Centre for Diversity. She has also overseen the development of a new state-of-the-art performing arts centre and secured over £2 million in donations for bursaries – part of GSAL’s long-term goal to expand access and opportunity.
Speaking about the nomination, Sue said: “This is a deeply humbling honour. I’ve always believed that education should open doors for every child – regardless of background – and I’ve been privileged to work with an extraordinary community at GSAL that shares that belief. Any success we’ve had has been a collective effort, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
Chair of the Governing Body, Angus Martin, added: “Sue’s leadership has been nothing short of transformational. She has led with moral clarity, courage and heart. This nomination is a fitting tribute as she prepares to retire later this year, and a moment of celebration for the entire GSAL community.”
Sue will retire in July 2025, after nearly a decade of service at GSAL and over three decades in education.
The winners will be announced at a gala event in London on 20 June.
