Improvement works on Bishopthorpe Road progressing ahead of schedule

As part of a long-term programme to resurface York’s roads and replace, upgrade and maintain traffic light systems across the city, the council has begun improvement works on Bishopthorpe Road this August.

The project is currently progressing ahead of schedule, meaning the planned resurfacing works can now be completed earlier than anticipated, helping us keep the project moving and minimising disruption in the area.

To enable these works to be undertaken safely, we will be implementing the planned overnight road closures earlier than planned. These will now take place on the nights of 13-14 August (8pm to 6am), instead of the previously publicised dates of 24-25 August.

Businesses will be open as usual, and we are once again asking people to plan ahead before travelling through the area.

Signposted diversions will be in place for motorists and cyclists.

During the overnight resurfacing closures (13-14 August):

• Motorists and cyclists will be diverted via Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street and Scarcroft Road.
• Bus services 11, 15 and 21 will be affected by the closures and diverted via Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street and Scarcroft Road.
• The bus stop at Bishopthorpe Road shops will be suspended for the duration of the work and a temporary bus stop provided on Scarcroft Road outside St Clement’s Church.

Residents of Ebor Street will be allowed access during these periods but will be requested to park elsewhere if possible.

“We’re pleased that works on Bishopthorpe Road are progressing well ahead of schedule. Thanks to favourable weather and good progress made on traffic signal and drainage improvements, we’ve been able to bring forward planned road resurfacing works. To minimise any disruption, we want to ensure residents, businesses and anyone travelling through the area is aware of these changes, to help them plan ahead.

“Record investment this year to improve York’s roads means smoother journeys for all and we’re grateful for everyone’s patience as we get this important work done.”
