King Charles jets into Teesside Airport for major regional visit
Teesside Airport has today (13 February) welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla through its terminal as part of the Royals’ visit to Tees Valley.
The monarchs arrived at 12:10, hitting the runway before departing for a packed tour of the region. They dropped in at Teesworks to see the progress on SeAH Wind’s £950million offshore wind monopile production facility and headed to an event taking place in the centre of Middlesbrough.
After the celebrations, King Charles and Queen Camilla left the airport at 15:30, being waved off by supporters.
This isn’t the first time Teesside has been the Royal Family’s airport of choice. In January 2022 Anne, the Princess Royal, touched down to follow in the footsteps of the now Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, who visited the region in April 2021.
The airport has played host to a number of other celebrities recently. Tom Cruise choppered in during the filming of Mission: Impossible in North Yorkshire in September 2022. Pop stars Miley Cyrus, Lewis Capaldi and MK all passed through Teesside when they performed at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend in Middlesbrough in 2019, and Boro lad James Arthur has also been seen supporting his local airport.
It goes without saying that Middlesbrough FC have been regular visitors over the years, as they jetted off to fixtures, with England captain Harry Kane also arriving in March 2022 with the Spurs team for their clash with Boro.
The airport has also been a stand-in for New York International Airport for the Prime Video rom-com Upgraded. During filming, Riverdale star Camila Mendes checked in for her flight – but only as a fictional passenger.
Managing Director Phil Forster said: “We were delighted to welcome the King and Queen to Teesside, and we pulled out all the stops to make their first and lasting impressions of our region the best they could be.
“It’s always an honour to be able to show off everything we’ve done to turn our airport around and make it a success once again – especially to members of the Royal Family who have long supported our Teesside.
“While we’ve welcomed plenty of VIPs in our time, we like to think that every passenger gets the same smooth, friendly and efficient service – whether they’re flying the flag for the country, or simply flying to Malaga!”
