Redefining creativity in the age of generative AI

Internationally acclaimed VFX artist and Visiting Professor at York St John University to give free lecture on how generative AI (artificial intelligence) is transforming creative practice.

Professor Andrew McNamara, an award winning VFX artist, creative and technologist, will share insights and perspectives on the challenges and opportunities AI presents, in a special talk on Wednesday 25 February at York St John University. His inaugural lecture, “From Pixels, Prompts to AI and Beyond: Will the Revolution be Generated”, focuses on both the transformative potential and the critical questions surrounding this new technological era.

Drawing on more than 35 years at the forefront of visual effects, film, broadcast, commercials and immersive media, Professor McNamara will explore how technological revolutions have historically reshaped creative practice and what this latest wave of AI innovation means for artists, designers and storytellers today. Through reflections on his own career journey, he will offer insights into how creatives can navigate uncertainty, harness innovation responsibly, and redefine originality in the age of generative systems.

Professor McNamara said:

“As the world changes, AI and machine learning are becoming part of society, and we’re seeing a massive shift within art and design and related disciplines. This lecture will examine what it truly means for creativity when machines can generate, and whether the revolution unfolding before us will indeed be generated.”

In his new role as Visiting Professor of AI in Design, Professor McNamara is supporting and advising the University’s School of the Arts in adopting AI into the curriculum. His expertise involves him working across modules such as Games Design, Animation, Graphics, Media Production, Fine Art and Performance, amongst others.

Professor McNamara currently leads the global Generative AI exploration unit at Cinesite in London, where he’s also the Executive Creative Director of the Immersive division. Beginning his career in IBM research and development during the early days of CGI, he went on to hold senior roles at the BBC, Publicis and Rushes. He has contributed to major films including Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Spectre, as well as commercial projects for brands such as Nike, Versace, Burberry and McDonald’s, and broadcasters including Disney and National Geographic.

The free lecture is open to all and takes place on Wednesday 25 February from 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the De Grey Lecture Theatre at York St John University. Following the lecture there will be a drinks reception from 7.00pm to 7.45pm for all attending.
