Repair works to start on Bishopthorpe Bridge
The council will be carrying out essential repairs on Bishopthorpe Bridge with work starting next week.
In recent months, following an inspection, the bridge has been subject to a weight limit. On Monday 13 January the strengthening work will start and is expected to last for 12 weeks.
A corrugated steel arch will be installed below Bishopthorpe Bridge to strengthen the bridge and ensure its long-term future. Alongside contractor, PBS Construction (North East) Ltd Services, the council is working to minimise disruption as much as possible.
However, to allow the repairs to be undertaken safely, the path/cycleway will be diverted between Appleton Court and Brunswick Nursery for the duration of the works. The diversion route will be via The Orchard, Beech Avenue, Maple Avenue, Appleton Road and Copmanthorpe Lane and will be signposted in both directions.
Access on Appleton Road will be maintained for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles at all times, with the weight limit still in place. Access to adjacent businesses, such as Brunswick Nursery, will also be maintained and bus routes will remain unchanged during the works.
At times over the next three months, off-peak lane closures will be in place along Appleton Road with two-way traffic lights.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport said: “This important route is being repaired as part of our highway maintenance programme.
“Installing this new arch will mean that the weight limit can be lifted and the future of the bridge secured for the long-term.
“While we are doing all we can with our contractors, we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused while these essential works take place.”
Site staff will be on hand to advise and assist residents and businesses about any access restrictions once the works are ongoing. Noise levels will be monitored throughout the works and work will take place 8am-5pm Monday to Friday with no night working needed.
Delays are expected, particularly when the lane closures are in place, so please plan ahead when making any journeys in the area during the works.
