What services does the college offer for local and regional employers?

Apprenticeships

The college offers some of the biggest range of work-based opportunities across Kirklees and West Yorkshire with around 1,000 apprentices working for over 1,000 employers.

An apprentice is employed by the business, training and expanding new skills in the work environment. However, six hours of their learning per week must take place off the job, be relevant to the apprenticeship standard and be different to the apprentice’s day-to-day tasks.

Work and industry placements

Employers often tell Kirklees College that some students are just not ready for the workplace. With your support offering work placements, they are helping to address this skills gap and helping to develop a student’s skills and confidence in readiness for the working world.

Placements are tailored to fit around employer needs, they should be beneficial to the business and seen by the student as ‘real work’. Placements range in length, and students are matched to placements relevant to the qualification they are studying and the qualities required for the role.

Live briefs and real-time business challenges

The college’s students across a range of subject areas and industries help to solve real problems for local companies. One great example of this is the work of the college with the recently reopened Arcade in Dewsbury. Over the last four years, The Arcade in Dewsbury(opens in new tab) has been one of Kirklees College’s most valued employer partners, helping to provide our students with career-enhancing placements and opportunities.

Curriculum development

Working together, employers have played a pivotal part in the development of the college’s national manufacturing training centre, helping to meet the identified skills shortage.
