The Grammar School at Leeds unveils exciting plans to transform its sixth form centre

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has announced plans to refurbish and upgrade its sixth form centre, creating a space to enhance independent learning, collaboration and student wellbeing.

The project forms part of the school’s ongoing investment in its 140-acre campus, following the opening of The Cryer, GSAL’s performing arts centre, in 2025, and reflects a continued focus on ensuring facilities evolve to meet students’ needs.

The redesigned sixth form centre will provide an inspiring environment for Year 12 and 13 students, supporting the transition from GCSE study to a more independent, university-style approach to learning, while also offering space to relax and socialise with peers. The project spans two floors and will create a spacious, modern and inspiring environment.

The refurbishment will include a range of enhancements, including:

• A redesigned student common room, offering a welcoming, flexible space with areas for collaboration.

• A dedicated quiet study room, providing individual workspaces for independent learning.

• An enhanced dining area with a relaxed café-style feel for informal study and socialising.

• Upgraded lighting and acoustics, creating a bright, calm environment that supports concentration.

• A cascading living wall, enhancing the space while supporting wellbeing and air quality.

• Sustainable features, including improved energy efficiency and recycling stations.

• A striking dedicated entrance, strengthening the sixth form’s identity.

The new centre – exclusively for sixth form students – will have a sophisticated look and feel, complementing other recent projects including the refurbishment of the Lawson Library and development of The Cryer.

Michael Hall, Principal, said: “We are delighted to be investing in our sixth form centre as part of our continued focus on providing an exceptional environment for our students. These developments will create a space that not only supports academic success, but also encourages independence, collaboration and a strong sense of community as students prepare for life beyond GSAL.”

Laurel Rees, assistant head and director of sixth form, added: “Our aim is to create a sixth form environment where students can choose how they spend their time – whether that’s focused independent study, collaborative work or simply taking time to relax. Input from our sixth form student council has been an important part of shaping these plans, including the need for flexible seating and spaces that support both group work and individual study. It will be a place where everyone feels inspired, supported and included.”

Work on the refurbishment began earlier this year and the refurbished sixth form centre will open this September.
